Elections to be held in Karachay-Cherkessia

Cherkessk/Agency Caucasus – The people of Karachay-Cherkessia will go to the ballot boxes in March of 2009 for both local and national elections.

Mehti Baytokov, Head of the Supreme Court of Elections of Karachay-Cherkessia, said that the parliamentary elections were tentatively scheduled for March 1, 2009. The exact day of the parliamentary elections will be announced sometime between November 20 and December 1.

The parliamentary elections will provide a chance for 73 seats to find their occupiers. Apart from the parliamentary elections, the electors will also cast their ballots to select the new mayors and members of the local district assemblies. Local elections will not, however, be held in the region of Abazinia, the northern part of Karachay-Cherkessia, where the people have already formed their own system of administration.
