Families of Abkhazian volunteers to get money

Sukhum/Agency Caucasus – The government of Abkhazia will pay regularly to the families of those who were killed after they voluntarily participated in the 1992-1993 war between Georgia and Abkhazia.

The government made its decision public on Tuesday after one and a half year’s work. "Joint work by the Archive of Caucasian Confederation of Mountaineer People, Abkhazian representatives, and the Ministry of Defense will eventually enable us to pay some of our debt to the families of those who died for us," said Leonid Lakerbaya, Deputy Prime Minister.

According to Lakerbaya, 240 people will be paid 1200 rubles multiplied by the number of each member of a family who is unable to work. The money will regularly go to the bank accounts of the deceased volunteers’ parents over age 50, to their wives who remain widows and have a kid or kids under age 16, and to their kids under age 18 or under 25 if they are enrolled at a boarding school.

13 months of the war between Georgia and Abkhazia left 268 volunteers dead. Over 3,000 of the 12,000 Abkhazians were killed, as well. The families of those who came to Abkhazia from North Caucasus, different Russian cities, Turkey, Syria, Germany and Jordan and were killed in the war are being invited regularly each year to have their holidays in Abkhazia.
