Ebzeyev becomes President of Karachay-Cherkessia

Cherkessk/Agency Caucasus – Boris Ebzeyev will be sworn into office on September 4 as the new President of the Republic of Karachay-Cherkessia.

The swearing-in of the new President will start at 12 p.m. state house and will host many federal officials from Moscow, leaders from North Caucasus, local officials and religious authorities.

At its extraordinary meeting on August 5, the Parliament of Karachay-Cherkessia unanimously approved of Russian President Dmitri Medvedev’s nomination of Ebzeyev as the presidential candidate.

Ebzeyev was born in the Kyrgyz village of Jangi-Jer on February 25, 1950, into a Karachay family that had been exiled by Joseph Stalin to the Central Asia. He was a member of Russia’s Consititutional Court for 17 years.

Ebzeyev wrote a doctoral dissertation in 1989 about human rights and liberties. He came to be known as the only member of the Constitutional Court who viewed the war in Chechnya as illegal.
