Zaytsev: Tensions are high in Gal

Sukhum/Agency Caucasus – The tensions were so high in the Gal region of Abkhazia that not only Abkhaz border guards and police officers but also Russian peacekeepers were targeted by almost daily fires from Georgia, said Anatoli Zaytsev, Abkhazia’s Chief of the General Staff.

Zaytsev also is in charge of the Defense Ministry. In response to the mounting tensions, a plan of action has already been drafted, Zaytsev said. He added that approval from the President of Abkhazia, Sergey Bagapsh, who is also the Commander in Chief, would prompt the army to take all necessary precautions.

Meanwhile, a special team of armed forces was formed in line with a resolution adopted at the National Security Council to fight against those who leaked from Georgia and got involved either in terrorist actions or kidnappings, Zaytsev said.
